Description
The aim of the Department of Civil Engineering is to provide high quality education, through undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies for the training of scientists capable of researching, analyzing, planning and executing Civil Engineering projects, while meeting the modern requirements for sustainable development, constructions economy, respect for the natural and man-made environment and lifelong knowledge. The aim also includes the integration of cutting-edge research and technology into the academic framework of the Department’s activities and the implementation of educational and research process with modern tools and methods.
The Undergraduate Studies Program is a 5-year program (10 academic semesters), 300 credits (ECTS), includes a Diploma Thesis and the possibility of Internship and leads to the acquisition of the Diploma in Civil Engineering which, corresponds to the specifications set for level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF). It integrates, both core courses and specialization courses (after the 6th semester) for the four (4) main directions of the Civil Engineering specialty, as they have been established in Greece up to now, that is, Structural, Geotechnical, Hydraulic and Transportation direction.
The Civil Engineering Department also offers Postgraduate Studies Programs (MSc), which were an important factor in the excellent external evaluation of postgraduate education of the University of West Attica, by the Authority for Quality Assurance and Certification in Higher Education
Main objectives of the Department and the Undergraduate Studies Program are:
To produce graduates who, through a well-designed program, will acquire the basic theoretical knowledge, as well as the specialized scientific and technological knowledge for practicing the Civil Engineering profession. Graduates will be prepared to analyze and design – with safety, economy as well as social and environmental sensitivity – technical projects, studies and research of their specialty, plan, execute and control laboratory and field tests and supervise the construction of technical projects .
To cultivate in graduates critical thinking, research and the ability of interdisciplinary synergies, to seek the optimal solution of the components of a technical project, in the given context and the conditions within which it will be constructed and operate (technical, temporal, financial, environmental , social etc.).
To integrate in the educational process the knowledge produced by research and to connect the students with research process and the corresponding activities of the Department, so that the graduates are mature for the evolution of their studies at the postgraduate level, to participate in research projects, and deepen in additional or new knowledge through lifelong learning.
After the successful completion of their 5-year studies, the graduates of the Department have acquired the necessary theoretical background and the scientific and technological knowledge, abilities and skills to be able to be employed and act as responsible Civil Engineers, in their fields of competence, in the private and in the public sector, independently or as executives of companies, organizations, educational institutions and civil engineering services and in general, in order to be able to respond to the fields of practice of the civil engineering profession as reflected in the current legislation.
