Action research, as a systematic investigative method, is becoming increasingly used within higher education. Action research can be used by the educators for two distinctive purposes: to improve aspects of their teaching practice and to advance their professional development. First, this paper explains the action research process. Second, the action research process is applied to a small-scale project undertaken by one of the authors in the context of “Accounting Information Systems” course at the Business Administration Department of TEI Athens. A change was introduced into the usual course structure and the students were asked, in teams, to search for, to study and to present a research article that would bring new knowledge in the classroom. Finally, reflections are offered on the outcomes of the project, the difficulties encountered and the presuppositions for improved performance of this teaching innovation in the future.en_US
