dc.description.abstract | This chapter explains the current debate between redistribution and recognition in philosophical circles which points to the ways political theorists have framed the issue of multiculturalism, addressing the identity-based harms incurred in liberal democracies. With this sketchy theoretical preview in mind it examines issues pertinent to the non-Orthodox minorities in Greece. Two issues related to protecting the freedom of religion that were resolved in favour of non-Orthodox faiths concerned the right of alternative military service for conscientious objectors and acceptance of the practice of cremation. In the last two decades Greece has made considerable progress in addressing harms inflicted on non-Orthodox minorities residing in the country. The twin pressures that the processes of democratization and Europeanization exerted on Greek society in the post-1974 period strengthened the promotion of civic and cultural rights and resulted in a host of measures that improved the condition of religious minorities in Greece. | en_US |
