The parents’ opinions and expectations of the pre-school education process

Abstract: 
Parents’ role as a parameter for improving the quality of pre-school education is nowconsidered especially important in educational policy. Their involvement in the everydaymatters of institutions, in the designing of educational programs and in effective reformationshas been promoted and institutionalized various countries. In Greece, their contribution inthe school’s operational matters was institutionalized ten years ago, while their involvementin the educational process is now required by the new curriculum. This research shows whichthe parent’s opinions and expectations are regarding the educational work produced in the frame of pre-school education. The timing is important as it is the first year of the children’sobligatory tuition at the kindergarten. This research is a pilot and will form the basis for theconduction of further research with the same subject. The method of observation was usedand the parents’ opinions where collected using questionnaires. The statistical analysis of thedata was made with SPSS 14. The results show that the parents:
a. Regard the Kindergarten as an educational institute and value very much theirchildren’s tuition at it.
b. Are satisfied by the contents of the curriculum and the response of kindergartenteacher towards their educational work.
c. They note problems that come from infrastructure and personnel shortages.
d. Wish greater cooperation and utilization of themselves in the educational process.
e. Outline a demanding model of kindergarten teacher that is characterised by adequateknowledge, willingness to teach, taking part in innovative programs, communication andmanagement skills
