Abstract:
Quality public space is an essential component of sustainable cities. Maintaining high quality in urban public spaces is an intrinsically complex issue that necessitates careful and accurate assessment alongside the many variables considered. It is fairly common that local authorities and councils in charge of public spaces lack the appropriate tools to assess the quality of public spaces in the area[s] of interest, often unable to have a representative overview of the current situation and to intervene effectively in order to improve the possible inadequacies that emerge. This paper includes a brief review of the research literature on the evaluation of public space quality, as well as the development of an evaluation methodology that employs multi-criteria analysis as a tool. Finally, an example was developed to demonstrate the classification of an area’s public spaces based on six criteria, with the main pillars of quality being the accessibility-walkability-inclusivity of the urban space, the comfort of residents during their stay in the public space, and their sense of security. The multi-criteria TOPSIS method, as well as the WAP weighting method was used for this process. The proposed methodological framework was created to help public space decision-makers identify the strengths and weaknesses of the community spaces under consideration in a simple and reliable manner, allowing for their optimal and sustainable management.
